The factors that determine the size color and shape of the pearl have to do with the size and shape of the nucleus and the region of the ocean in which the mollusk resides. Pearls are found in various types of mollusks both in saltwater and freshwater. The color of a pearl may or may not affect its cost though uniformity of color makes pearls more valuable.
